Over 50 years ago, Peer Baekgaard, a young Danish immigrant, came to New York City with a dozen hand-carved wooden toy boats.
Armed with only a limited grasp of the English language, he confidently entered New York City's famed FAO Schwartz to offer his boats for sale. Although the store clerk refused to see him without an appointment, the store's buyer overheard Baekgaard's conviction and made an exception.
Once the buyer saw the quality and craftsmanship of the toy boats, he was impressed and bought all of the boats that Baekgaard had with him. On that day, Baekgaard, Ltd. was born. That first small sale laid the foundation for Baekgaard, Ltd. to become what it is today: one of the world's finest importers, manufacturers, and distributors of high end gifts.
Today, Baekgaard, Ltd. is located in Fort Wayne, Indiana. In 2003 Baekgaard's wife, Barbara, and her business partner, Art Mandelbaum, became shareholders, ensuring that the company's reputation for unique and high quality products will continue.
Over the years, the company has branched out into fine home furnishings and high quality men's luggage and accessories. Baekgaard, Ltd. also carries an extensive selection of barware items, desk accessories, games and artwork.
